Smallholder farmers in the area take good care of this lush landscape and have prohibited hunting of wild animals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnlike many other coffee-producing towns in Mexico, this community has a large population of young coffee farmers who want to continue the craft using techniques that have been passed down over generations. They also want to keep cultivating varieties that are endemic to the area.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eProducers in this area plant native trees (a popular one is called the ice cream bean tree!!)  in between rows of coffee plants to provide them with much-needed shade. These plants also can provide food, medicine, construction materials, and help with water retention. Producers usually have their own mini processing stations at home and harvests are carried out with the help of family and neighbors.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTaste it and see why coffees from this region have recently gained attention by placing high in both regional coffee competitions and international cupping panels. It’s a communal lot, meaning many producers can receive a premium price for their coffee, no matter how small their crop is. The farmers also receive feedback for every crop so that they can refine growing and processing methods. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAn important part of the success of these types of lots is very careful quality control. Each separate crop is cupped (tasted) multiple times to make sure it meets quality expectations and ensures consistency. If a coffee doesn’t meet expectations, the farmers still receive feedback in the hopes that their next crop will improve so they can receive the premium prices.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis lot features the most iconic variety of this region, Chiroso. It’s known for its complex, delicious profile that has helped put Urrao on the specialty coffee map. We taste smooth and tropical mango, juicy orange, and the fun sweetness of gummy candy. False banana and acacia trees are used for shade for the coffee plants, which is necessary for high-quality coffee. It’s a relatively new station that started in 2023 where over 800 folks from the community deliver their cherries.
